THE SORROWFUL MYSTERIES

THIS WEBPAGE IS ALSO AVAILABLE
AS A PODCAST HERE

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth; And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord;
Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
Born of the Virgin Mary,
Suffered under Pontius Pilate,
Was crucified, died, and was buried.
He descended into hell.
The third day he rose again from the dead.
He ascended into Heaven,
And is seated at the right hand of God, the Father Almighty;
From thence he shall come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
The Holy Catholic Church,
The Communion of Saints,
The forgiveness of sins,
The resurrection of the body,
And life everlasting. Amen.

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy Kingdom come. Thy Will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen.

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen. (3 times)

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.  As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

THE FIRST SORROWFUL MYSTERY:
THE AGONY IN THE GARDEN

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy Kingdom come. Thy Will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen.

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen.

Then He said to them, "My soul is sad, even unto death. Wait here and watch with Me." (Matt. 26:38)

HAIL MARY

And going forward a little, He fell on the ground and began to pray.  (Mark 14:35)

THE SECOND SORROWFUL MYSTERY:
THE SCOURGING AT THE PILLAR

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy Kingdom come. Thy Will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen.

They bound Jesus and delivered Him to Pilate. And Pilate asked Him, "Art thou the king of the Jews?" (Mark 15:1-2)

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen.

Jesus answered, "My kingdom is not of this world.  But thou sayest it; I am a king." (John 18:36-37)

HAIL MARY

"This is why I was born, and why I have come into the world, to bear witness to the truth." (John 18:37)

HAIL MARY

Then Pilate said, “I find no guilt in this man. I will therefore chastise Him and release Him." (Luke 23:4, 16)

HAIL MARY

Pilate then took Jesus and had Him scourged. (John 19:1)

HAIL MARY

Oppressed and condemned, He was taken away, a man of suffering. (Isa. 53:8, 3)

It was our infirmities that He bore, our sufferings, that He endured.  (Isa. 53:4)

HAIL MARY

Upon Him was the chastisement that makes us whole, by His stripes we are healed. (Isa. 53:5)

HAIL MARY

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.  As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

O my Jesus, forgive us our sins; save us from the fires of Hell; lead all souls to Heaven, especially those in most need of Thy mercy!

THE THIRD SORROWFUL MYSTERY:
THE CROWNING WITH THORNS

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy Kingdom come. Thy Will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen.

Now the soldiers led Him away into the courtyard, and they stripped Him and put on Him a purple cloak. (Mark 15:16; Matt. 27:28)

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen.

And plaiting a crown of thorns they put it on His head, and a reed into His right hand. (Matt. 27:29)

HAIL MARY

And bending the knee before Him they mocked Him, saying, “Hail, King of the Jews!" (Matt. 27:29)

HAIL MARY

And they spat on Him, and took the reed and kept striking Him on the head. (Matt. 27:50)

HAIL MARY

Pilate again went outside and said, “I bring Him out to you, that you may know that I find no guilt in Him." (John 19:4)

HAIL MARY

Jesus therefore came forth, wearing the crown of thorns and the purple cloak. (John 19:5)

HAIL MARY

And Pilate said to them, "Behold the man!"  But they cried out, "Away with Him! Crucify Him!" (John 19:5, 15)

HAIL MARY

"Why, what evil has He done?"  But they kept crying out the more, "Crucify Him!" (Mark 15:14)

HAIL MARY

"Shall I crucify your king?" And the chief priests answered, "We have no king but Caesar." (John 19:15)

HAIL MARY

Then he handed Him over to them to be crucified. And so they took Jesus and led Him away. (John 19:16)

THE FOURTH SORROWFUL MYSTERY: THE CARRYING OF THE CROSS

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy Kingdom come. Thy Will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen.

"If anyone wishes to come after Me let him deny himself." (Luke 9:23)

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen.

"And take up his cross daily, and follow Me." (Luke 9:23)

HAIL MARY

And bearing the cross for Himself, He went forth to the place called "The Skull." (John 19:17)

HAIL MARY

And they laid hold of a certain Simon of Cyrene, and upon him they laid the cross to bear it after Jesus. (Luke 23:26)

HAIL MARY

"And you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy, and My burden light." (Matt. 11:29-30)

HAIL MARY

Now there was following Him a great crowd of people, and of women, who were bewailing and lamenting Him. (Luke 23:27)

HAIL MARY

Jesus, turning to them, said, "Do not weep for Me, but weep for yourselves and for your children." (Luke 23:28)

O my Jesus, forgive us our sins; save us from the fires of Hell; lead all souls to Heaven, especially those in most need of Thy mercy!

HAIL HOLY QUEEN, Mother of mercy, Our life, our sweetness, and our hope. To thee do we cry, poor banished children of Eve. To thee do we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping in this valley of tears. Turn then, most gracious advocate, thine eyes of mercy towards us. And after this, our exile, show unto us the blessed fruit of thy womb, Jesus. O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary.

V. Pray for us oh holy mother of God.
(This line is read by one person when the Hail Holy Queen
is being recited in a group setting.)
R. That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.
(This line is the response given by the group.)

"LET US PRAY: O God, whose only begotten Son, by his life, death and resurrection, has purchased for us the rewards of eternal life, grant, we beseech thee, that meditating upon these mysteries of the most holy Rosary of the Blessed Virgin Mary, we may imitate what they contain and obtain what they promise, through the same Christ our Lord. Amen.”

May the Divine Assistance remain always with us, and may the souls of the Faithful Departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace.

In the Name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen.
